Uplistsikhe( Lord’s castle) an ancient cave city is located above north side of the Mtkvari River, it is one of the oldest settlements in the Caucasus. The history of the monument begins at the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC. This city was the country’s religious, political and cultural center, residence of the Kartli Kings. The urban structure of the city is almost the same as the original one: the church, the residential and economical rocky halls, the secret tunnels, the streets and the squares, there are about two thousand (170 only last) caves, including the Theatron and the Tamar Hall. Perhaps the antique theater was supposed to be in the place of Theatron. Archaeological excavations have been found jewelry in gold, silver, bronze , ceramics samples. Uplistsikhe ( Lord’s castle ) the only over ground monument of antic time that has reached our days on the territory of Georgia
Metekhi Cathedral is famous with a living legend about a miracle form the sky and how it saved the locals from invaders. The cathedral dates from the XII-XIII centuries, but with some historical information, the church exists from the time of Gorgasali V Century. The exterior facade is richly decorated, 12 windows are carved in the dome. Every Saturday, Sunday and Great Holidays there are liturgies.
Ateni Sioni VII – VIII century, is one of few cross dome tetra-arch type construction in Georgia. It is located in the fantastic beautiful Ateni gorge, on the right bank or the Tana river and its surrounded by the magnificent nature. The cathedral was completely painted in the second half of XI century. On the walls of Ateni Sioni Cathedral remain unique Georgian inscriptions and postscripts in Asomtavruli, interesting bareliefs, frescoes and etc.
In the center of Gori, there is house-museum of the Soviet Union dictator- Iosif Stalin, which consists of: One-story house-museum with two rooms, where he Iosif Stalin lived between 1879 and 1883 year, Marble Pavilion, which was built in 1837, wagon – train that Stalin traveled to all international conferences and etc.
The historical fortress – Goristsikhe was built on a rocky hill in the center of the city IV-III BC from where you will have great view of Gori and its region. The fortress was restored several times, due to repeated destructions. In 1920, an earthquake caused great damage to the fortress.
